Our Story

From humble beginnings to community transformation - discover the journey that led us to where we are today.

Founded in 2000 by a group of skilled and resourceful women in Cape Town, Siyazama Community Development Centre began as a response to the challenges facing children and youth in disadvantaged communities across the Western Cape. Our founder, Zelpha Gaba, a qualified teacher and retired deputy principal, started remedial education services and a community learning center in 1991, embodying the spirit of Ubuntu.

The organization was officially established in 2000 after seeing local children struggle with drug abuse, robbery, and shoplifting. We recognized that traditional approaches to youth development often fell short because they didn't address the complex, interconnected issues that young people face.

Today, we're proud to be a registered non-profit organization, working with communities across the Western Cape to provide humanitarian support through our afterschool program, soup kitchen project, sustainable livelihood program, life skills program, early childhood centre, and training & development projects that strengthen our Rainbow Nation.

The name "Siyazama" means "we are trying" or "we are attempting" in isiXhosa, reflecting our commitment to continuous effort and improvement in serving our communities. Every day, we strive to do better, reach more young people, and create deeper, more meaningful impact.
